You won’t be able to miss this Puerto Rican favorite, recognizable by its grasshopper-green exterior and overflowing crowds of festive diners. In fact, their comida criolla is so popular that it’s taken over the block: a sister bodega does a booming takeout business, while gift store Conchita sells wares from San Juan and beyond.Sol Food’s soul food is hearty and abundant, from tamale-like pasteles of mashed plantain and taro stuffed with garlicky pork to fragrant sautéed shrimp loaded with tomato, onion and spices. Outstanding daily specials, like arroz con pollo and pernil, are also big draws. Wash it all down with a delicious mango iced tea, and don’t skip the decadent pineapple bread pudding, soaked in warm, buttery mango sauce, for dessert.
