Mokubei stands across from the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, where the Miyako Odori dance festival is performed. The sukiya-style building with its attractive wood grain blends in well. Shintaro Terada, the 4th-generation owner-chef, pours his heart into Kyo-ryori that reflects the events of the year. The waka poetry that accompany the hassun are one of the highlights. Inventive combinations, such as roe-bearing ayu wreathed in smoky fragrance and lotus root cake with stewed eel, make Mokube engaging.
